18 Months Later, Family Reunited with Dog Lost in Hurricane
It wasn't a typical reunion story. There was no miraculous phone call or a coincidental sighting. Just a stroke of luck with a dash of fate.
Chuck and Elicia James lost their pit bull mix, Reckless, in the devastating destruction of Hurricane Sandy. After 18 months, they had little hope of every seeing their beloved pet again. Still, they never stopped looking for him.
As a surprise for their daughter's birthday, they decided to visit the local animal shelter to try to find a new dog that could fill the hole that was left after the disappearance of Reckless.
The very first dog that was brought out to them had a striking resemblance to Reckless. It only took a moment for the James' and their dog to realize that the search was over. A unique scar on Reckless's head confirmed that he was in fact their missing dog.
The family is currently living in a hotel, as they were displaced from their home after the storm. Fortunately, the hotel has welcomed Reckless with open arms, and the family is overjoyed to have their precious pet back with them at last.
The rescue of 180 Chihuahuas sparks a larger conversation on how to transition dogs from crisis situations into homes.
