Merrick pet food recall

Post by josie1918 »

On August 3, Merrick Pet Products expanded their July 2, 2010 voluntary recall to include 83 additional cases of Beef Filet Squares for Dogs (Texas Hold’Ems) in 10 oz. packages. The company notes that no illnesses have been reported to date, but a sample of the treats tested positive for salmonella.

The expanded Merrick recall adds to the growing number of pet food products recalled due to potential salmonella contamination. Last week, Procter & Gamble recalled several specialized Iams and Eukanuba dry dog foods, an addition to their earlier recall of dry cat foods.

Healthy dogs are often unaffected by salmonella, or may exhibit mild symptoms such as a lack of appetite or slight fever. More severe cases may produce lethargy, higher fever, diarrhea or vomiting. Dog owners whose dogs have eaten the recalled Merrick treats and are showing any of these symptoms should contact their veterinarians.

Of greater concern is the potential for healthy but infected dogs to transmit salmonella to other pets or to humans. Salmonella in humans can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, fever and diarrhea. Severe cases can result in cardiac or urinary tract infections, eye irritation, and muscle or arthritis pain. Humans can also contract salmonella by handling the treats or touch surfaces that have had contact with the treats.

Beef Filet Squares (Texas Hold ‘Ems) are sold in 10 oz. plastic bags, and are marked with a lot number and "Best By" date at the top of the bag and a printed sticker on the bottom. The lots affected by the recall were sold in stores throughout the United States. The original recall covered lot number 10084TL7 with a "Best By" date of March 24, 2012; the expanded recall includes lot number 10127 with a "Best By" date of May 6, 2012. Pet owners who have purchased these treats are advised to dispose of them in a sealed container or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Dog owners who have questions can contact the Merrick company at (800) 664-7387 Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Central time.
