How to deal with no walks for seven days due to stitchs

Post by soliscjw »

Yesterday my puppy got bitten my one of my uncles dogs (my fault had thought they were playing and did not pick up on the ques that my uncles dog was giving me and Kahlan) Kahlan my almost 12 week old Siberian Husky puppy had to get stitches and according to the vet i should not walk her for seven days i am on day two and Kahlan feels fine and is really hyper and is not sleeping during the night like she did when i could walk her 3 miles at night. Is there anything I can do to help her sleep I have been using the D.A.P. (dog appeasing pheromone) system from the day I brought her home i think that is helping but not enough is there a way to help her burn enough energy to get her to sleep through the night or another safe trick to help her?
thanks, Chris

after reading another post close to mine and the advice there is good about a trip to the park the big thing with me is that I do not drive so a trip to the park would involve walking to the park and i have sat with her on my patio and that does not seem to help much

Have a look at the clicker training thread in the Dog Training Articles section of the forum - you could work on some clicker stuff whilst she cant walk.

I have to say... 3 miles is a long way for a puppy - I dont think id be giving a 12 week old pup that much exercise, right now you want to focus more on socialisation, growing (takes a lot of energy) and mental stimulation such as the clicker training.

The other thing you can do is feed her meals from a couple of Kong toys - this will take up some time and some energy and as she gets good at them you can make the food harder to get out, wet it down and freeze it, melt cheese over it in the microwave etc.. so she really has to work for her food.

thanks just filled one of her toys with peanut butter and put it in the freezer and as far as the 3 mile walks they got started by me expanding the distance reading how Kahlan was doing and she seems to like them (I seem to be good at reading her just not other dogs.) and it helped with the vet on Monday she was good and relaxed when the vet was looking at her

No suggestions at all I'm afraid but can sympathise as we have 4 weeks of no weight bearing to get through as you saw on my post I think - nearly a week in and Ruby is awake crying and howling most of the night as she is unable to play and use up her energy in the evenings any more and wants to play all night!

We do try playing with her toys letting her pull and tug on things which she enjoys and tires her a bit but not enough sadly! We also let her walk on her lead in the garden to keep her under control so on a positive note she is learning how to use a lead at the moment.

Am trying some of the tips I was given earlier in the week in my thread but so far not helping with night sleep :(

Am looking forward to seeing if you receive any more tips.

Good luck!

Update I spoke with the vet and she has given her okay to short walks starting today not long mind you but and only two days early but I can walk her around the block which is less that a 10 minute walk but it is a walk and on Sunday which is day 7 we can go on longer walks now mind you not as long as we were but I can take her up a street with a big steep hill. I also found out why they did not want her to go on walks while she can not use her paws to scratch at the stitches she has found out that she can use objects like the sidewalk to scratch with (I do not blame her stitches itch like mad when the wound starts healing I know when my chest started healing after my open heart and my ankle after that surgery mine itched like heck) and she tries real hard to itch her wound that way.
