Bone meal?

Post by ZaraD »

Hi all

One of my employees is struggling to pick which bone to pick for her Labrador. She used to get all his food from a butchers that's now closed and she's tried him on natural instinct raw food as it's the food he was weaned onto by his breeder when he was a pup and she was given 2 tubs of natural instinct puppy food when she picked him up at 8weeks old. He loves his NI food and is doing really well but she's unsure of which bone meal to choose.

He used to get a whole chicken carcass for his bone meal twice a week as her butcher gave them free to her. She likes the look of NI chicken carcass but her vet said chicken carcasses aren't bone meals and she'd be better getting lamb ribs ect.

Here's the chicken carcass https://www.naturalinstinct.com/chicken-carcass

Are chicken carcass classed as a bone meal?

Yes, chicken carcass has bones in so it counts as a bone meal. I don't know where her vet got his idea from, though there's no reason she couldn't give her dog lamb ribs as well/instead.

Note that the puppy food will probably already have minced bone in so will be nutritionally balanced - the whole bones in a chicken carcass or ribs will be good for her lab's teeth though.
