nice reminder that it isn't always just the human end of the leash that determines how a dog turns out.

Absolutely When Jasper arrived I was armed with 'The Perfect Puppy' book and had checked out positive training classes... and even I couldn't have screwed up badly enough to explain Jasper's guarding and SA issues And though I have moved him a long way along the scale from 'severe guarding/SA' to the other end, I believe he will always guard in certain circumstances, and will never be 100% relaxed about being left. And I love him for who he is.
As far as I know neither of his parents were guarders, but we've met his mum's owner several times and a few things have become apparent - his mum's a 'grumpy madam', his sister's too shy for the show ring, another of his siblings growled at the judge, and his dad's a whinger. The rest of his family are workers, in multi-dog households, which may affect how the 'grumpy' genes ended up expressing themselves.
