Yup - he's 9/16 greyhound, 1/4 deerhound, 1/4 Irish terrier and 1/8 Bedlington. No wonder he's confused

Wow you would never have thought he had Irish or Belington terrier in him I thought he was a greyhound \deerhound cross

If I do a Google image search on 'Irish terrier' and imagine the face a bit more pointy, with the beardy bit tapered, I can really see something of Jasper in them. The Bedlington is harder to spot, but then the characteristic look of the Beddy is really defined by the coat and how it's shaped over the face.

Bax....kind of... made a new friend. there's an elderly blind pug next door that ive seen before but ive always steered bax well clear of him. well today they met! Bax was wildly excited and enthusiastically sniffed butt/crotch/face repeatedly. Pug was interested... but a bit more stoic then Bax.

Then Bax discovered there was a HUMAN at the end of the pugs leash and totally lost his very last marble in an attempt to get snuggles from her. she very kindly obliged and i left before he made a nuisance of himself.

I think its quasi official. Bax is DEF more of a people dog then a dog dog which is a 180 flip for him.

when i first got him he had impeccable dog manners (handled meeting dog aggressive chi Ki for the first time like a champ when he was only 8 months old) since then hes always been pretty good with dogs but as he aged he had a few snarks at them which has led to some caution on my part. (no fights just a growl or a snap)

His peopling skills though started at... hiding under a chair growling and snapping at people if they tried to touch him.....to eagerly mugging people for snuggles and totally ignoring their dog.

power of positive training people! (also screw socialization windows. Bax makes his own windows!)

Great job you have done there, over a sensible timescale. FWIW I am in a minority (probably of one) in disagreeing with current thinking about socialisation and its windows.

Be aware that his interest and deep sniffing of the pug is far more likely to be because the pug is ill/weak than because he is going to see it as a 'friend'.

Yay for Bax!

Isn't growling and snapping at dogs normal for a terrier? Lovely little Jack Russel dude called Tim Merlin meets up with occsionally. Tim and Merlin are buds, chase each other around loving life, but then Tim's owner dropped the 'Oh he's just had a right old go at a Rottweiler - he thinks bigger they are harder they fall'. Same with a lovely Scottie girl called Isabel. She loves Merlin, but apparently she had her grump on yesterday with another male dog and told him very firmly to 'do one.'

Lovely to hear Bax is growing in confidence!

*NODNOD* yeah im gonna avoid him in the future. If a dog isn't as enthusiastic about meeting Bax as Bax is i tend to hustle along. He can be a bit overwhelming and I'd hate to traumatize a more fragile dog with Bax's...overtures.

EDIT: yeah LoQ sometimes i wonder if it's just Bax being Bax. I'm never worried that Bax will get snapped at in return, I'm just concerned for the other dog Especially puppies. I'd hate to shake their confidence in the world.

It's always a lovely day though when i find a dog that matches Bax and can out sass him and they have a grand old time with all their play bows and chasing.

But usually its just a polite stop and sniff and then i hustle along. Most dogs seem to be to dignified to romp with Bax. then again... Bax is five and should probably be to old to romp like a puppy anyway....sigh... sometimes i wonder if i snipped to soon.....

Saw something lovely today that has eased some of my multi dog fears. Merlin found half a tennis ball, and of course as every dog owner knows found items = treasure. Well we ran into one of our neighbours and her dog. Merlin is always trying to get her dog to play with him, and sometimes he bounces a bit (he's an 8 year old black lab - huge though!). Today Merlin presented his treasure to try and start a game. He put it down in front of him, backed away and watched with eagerness. It worked! They bounced around for a few seconds, then Merlin got his treasure back.

As a dog he's more likely to guard from humans than dogs (in fact I've never once seen him guard anything with dogs and he's been around lots of dogs with lots of toys and food) which I can only assume is down to learned behaviour rather than genetic. Either way it made me smile.

Well, we had a slightly traumatic walk this morning. Timber decided to chomp on the very, very, sloppy poo that another dog had done. Well I hope it was a dog. Or at least I think I hope that . Being so soft as to be almost diarrhoea he couldn't 'drop it' - not that he is very reliable at that anyway. Poo eating is not something he is guilty of normally, so it must have gone through something else's digestive system fast enough to still be tempting. So I had a rather smelly disgusting face to clean when I got home. Fortunately there don't seem to have been any after effects.

Is Timber a licky dog???

Three times in the last couple of years Jasper has eaten dog (I hope) poo. Each time off the beaten track, bright orange and paste-like in consistency so I'm sure it's the same dog. Unlike cow & horse poo, it doesn't wash off the muzzle in a pond, stream or deep puddle - it needs a good scrubbing when I get home

Jasper keeps wanting to go to the park on our walks. This, I'm sure, is only because of the woman who walks four tiny dogs (or a multi-pack of snack-sizes as we call them) who gives him whole digestive biscuits while her four dogs yap and snap around his ankles. Still, it solves the problem of how to get him to have a good run - he often belts over to her from the far side of the field, and after I can see he's pestering her again so know he's finished the biscuit, I whistle him and he belts back to me again.

I know it's not ideal, but people will insist on giving other dogs treats without asking - or asking once they have the treat in their hand and there's a puddle of drool at Jasper's feet. It also means that J seems to think that anyone with a multi-pack of snack-sizes is handing out digestives, and you can imagine what some owners of teeny tiny dogs think if he spots them before I do and this great big greyhound-shaped thing belts over to them.

Jasper snaffled some cat poo out of the litter tray a couple of days ago, but luckily it was just before I fed him so his mouth would have got a good cleanout then. Not that I'd want him to lick me straight after he'd been eating raw food either, but it's better than cat poo!

He never licks though (unless there's something tasty on my hand). I wonder why some dogs do and some don't?

It's interesting. All my lurchers have been very licky, but our current terrier very seldom licks, and then when she does, is so overcome at what she has done, she hides her face between her front paws. We've had her from 8 weeks with no issues. She's damned cute when she isn't being a terrier, and yes she is a proper terrier!

Bax wuffles. gets his face as close as he can and snuffles at me but doesnt lick.

the only time he licks is when hes feeling ESPECIALLY cozy and my hand is close and then he'll just cuddle up and quietly groom my hand for a bit.
