Re: Dogs & horses

I'm cautious to comment on dogs running down a beach with horses. It does sound like insanity when you read it, but it depends on whether it's all under control with everybody completely happy about it, horses and dogs included. My concern would be that the next time the dog encounters a horse he'l...

Re: Constant barking at night

I wouldn't worry too much about the barking when your friends move around in the night. When my mum comes to stay, for the first night or two if she goes to the loo in the night he'll be barking & growling at the door (he sleeps in our room) - he absolutely loves her, so must just know there's a...

Re: A dog for my friend

Thanks, I'll suggest those to her. The springador does sound as if it could fit the bill, and they're probably more readily available where she lives than Buhunds  I'd imagine a springador would be good with the girls too.

Re: Dogs & horses

Oh, I love that picture, wvvdiup1  But - getting down to the details, is this a public foot path (horses not allowed), a bridleway (horses obviously allowed, as are pedestrians), restricted byway (everyone but motorvehicles, including driven horses!) or a permissive path where say, pedestrians ...

Re: Taking a deep breath........

I'm afraid I don't have any advice either, but wanted to sympathise as I also have fibromyalgia - but just one dog! I agree with Ari, if you can't give all five dogs what they need because of your health, please don't feel guilty about rehoming some (probably the one(s) you think could be most succe...

Re: Overexertion and funny tummy

Lurchers have no 'safety stop' and will run themselves to a standstill. When my mum saw him after a chase last year, she really was worried he was about to expire he was so done in... But if another deer had walked past just then I have no doubt he'd have been up and off again if I hadn't p...

A dog for my friend

Here's something I've been pondering over... I have a friend who works as housekeeper for the 'lord of the manor' in a tiny village where time has stood still and is still really quite feudal  She also looks after her boss's small flock of sheep, geese & chickens. She can start a day counti...

Overexertion and funny tummy

Since his deer-chasing episode on Tuesday, and more so since his repeat performance yesterday, he's not been himself. Very quiet, which is understandable as I think he's a bit achey, and the nearest he's got to playing has been some half-hearted games of tug with him lying on his side. His appetite ...

Re: Bonding with Your Dog

Actually... I once had Jasper on lead in the woods (we'd just encountered a horse, or a dog recovering from surgery he wanted to play with, or something) and he spotted a squirrel. He took off, right to the end of the six-foot lead, and then remembered he was on lead and stopped. My arm wasn't even ...

Re: Bonding with Your Dog

Finally, I've finished :D I can't say I learnt a great deal from this book. The main focus is on encouraging interaction with your dog, lots of praise, rewarding eye contact and being close, and being a fun person to spend time with, so they never know when you're going to leap up and invite a game ...

Re: Help please! Need advice on training our lurcher

That's a shame - but yes, you can't take risks. Plenty of lurchers (particularly rescues) can never, or rarely, go off lead because of their prey drive, but are still happy :D

Re: Need help and hugs.

I'm so sorry to hear that :( ((((((((((((((((MASSIVE HUGS)))))))))))))))))) to you, OH, and Bear. No one can really tell you what to do, but I'm sure you'll do what's right for Bear. If there was a good chance of a full recovery, I'd be much more inclined to put my dog through some short-term stress...

Re: Slave to paddy

kids are a darn sight more selfish than dogs and ask a LOT of us  ... When legal ... they caught other pest species too. Oh, if only.... When I hear the 'don't treat your dogs like kids' argument I often think we've got it the wrong way round and should treat our kids more like dogs - tr...

Re: Help please! Need advice on training our lurcher

My own lurcher is currently whining and whingeing because he's all sore after his second deer chase this week... We've had him from a pup and his recall isn't bad for a lurcher, but if deer are involved that's another matter altogether. I'd also recommend 'The House Lurcher' - I've just check...
