"Towels"

Someone (bendog?) mentioned a game where treats were wrapped in towels for the dog to unwrap and find... This has been a huge hit with Ari!! Anything - treats, or toys - goes inside a small towel inside a bigger one inside a still bigger one. A terrific game, thanks

Re: Finding some courage

Well done Sarah! I must say that it's easier with a big dog to avoid unwanted encounters... Other dog owners, and people in general, seem to be on much higher alert. Yesterday in the park a jogger went by us, with Ari just looking at her... she paused for a second and asked "is he as mean as he...

Re: Springer/Cocker Spaniel Advice. Please Help.

I would say what a waste of time for all of you that have given so much of your time, knowledge and expertise to help this dog despite owners who say one thing but make little actual effort, except for the fact that it will help others who come to the forum reading this who might be in a similar si...

Thanksgiving - thanks

Well.. I know that thanksgiving is something we only celebrate here in US, and we have folks here from all over the world.. But it kicks off the holiday season, and is a good occasion to say a big Thank You to the moderators, experts, and regular contributors on this forum. The advice you've given t...

Re: Mind reading

I would put him to work! :)
Unless something is bothering him or he needs to go out, this may be an indication that he's bored, and ready for a game or a training session.

Re: Leash reactivity in my rescue dog. ALL help appreciated!

On the subject of separation anxiety. Not sure if I want to formulate an advice, maybe this approach is not for every dog, or has some flaws.. Let me just share our experience. For some reason we focused on this a bit late, when Ari was probably 6 months or maybe even older.. I don't think he had be...

Re: Leash reactivity in my rescue dog. ALL help appreciated!

Not really an expert, I just would like to pass along a small practical advice (which I received on this forum, thanks, Nettle) - if there is no way to turn around and you have no choice but to pass another dog, try to do this dog-person-person-dog, with 2 people between 2 dogs. I see from time to t...

Re: New dog anxiety...

Yep, that's what it usually takes. A lot of work, which can be challenging for those of us who have all kinds of responsibilities (jobs, kids, parents, dogs, friends, you name it...). There are only 24 hrs in a day, and a lot of balls to keep in the air. The rewards of successful dog ownership, howe...

Re: Dog parks- yay or nay?

I wonder if it would be possible to have a code of conduct for dog parks? Where we are - some dog parks have stricter rules then others. There is a very nice one near by where intact males over 6 months are not allowed, so we are unfortunately banned from that one. The one we go to allows intact ma...

Re: Dog parks- yay or nay?

but when he plays with dogs three times his size, he can get overwhelmed. It worries me that I wouldn't be able to step in in time if one of them became genuinely aggressive. In this case I would avoid the place for the time being, especially considering that some of the other owners don't pay clos...

Re: Dog parks- yay or nay?

Agree with Suzette.. Not for every dog. For Ari - dog park has been mostly very positive experience... I can't unfortunately say that every dog who crosses paths with him enjoys it.. He is a big, high energy boy (90+ lbs, 14 months, unneutered still).. But one thing we did - we found a playground wh...

Re: 6m Lab wants to play with everyone!

Yes.. We had this with Ari, as many others did I am sure.. Jumping on people - that's an easy one to correct, I think, because you can do this at home. Here is what worked for us: every time he jumped on anyone - everyone would just leave the room for a minute. No words, no explanations to him, ever...
