Re: How do I teach a rapid response to commands?
I am disappointed with the responses above. Of course some breeds and some individuals are predisposed to respond to training better than some others. Did you think I don't know that? I don't expect my Chihuahua to herd sheep or to compete with a bloodhound in following a scent trail. However, all b...

Re: How do I teach a rapid response to commands?
Thanks for referring me to that thread. It gave me a few more ideas of what games to play with my dog,, though I am hard pressed to understand why you assume that I don't exercise her mind, and quite non-plussed by your referring to commands as "pointless". Really?

How do I teach a rapid response to commands?
My Chihuahua is quite an obedient girl; but she often takes her sweet time to respond to a command. I have seen dogs sit and lie down in a flash, almost before the handler finishes the command. How do you teach that?

Re: Considering an e-collar
I take only my own dog, a sweet natured, friendly, and very well behaved Chihuahua to training classes. She has completed intermediate obedience, two nose work classes, tricks and K9 freestyle . (I am just crowing.) She will be doing rally obedience and advanced obedience in that order. I also train...

Re: Considering an e-collar
I'm familiar with sirius. It seems they only take dogs that have been through their puppy program Also, they don't have the kinds of programs I am interested in for my personal dog, mainly doggy sports.

Re: Considering an e-collar
PS. As for prong collars, I HATE them. Almost as much as choke collars. I have gone up to complete strangers walking their dogs on those things and convinced them to switch to a head collar or easy walker. Gordon's owner was using a prong collar on him before I convinced her to give it up for an eas...

Re: Considering an e-collar
Thanks everyone for your great feedback and suggestions. I realize you are right that if he surprises me with his sudden lurches, I wouldn't be prepared to use the e-collar anyway. I really hated the idea anyway. I have discarded the idea. I am working harder than ever on his impulse control by maki...

Re: Considering an e-collar
Great feedback! Thanks, everyone. Yes, I am convinced that heavy duty work on impulse control is the name of the game. Forget the e-collar. Now all I have to do is convince his owner to work with me on this. Normally, I get him only twice a week and the intent there is for him to get exercise. I'll ...

Considering an e-collar
I know; this is not the place to get encouragement for using an e-collar. I could use sound advice, but don't lecture me I have been walking the biggest Golden Retriever I have ever seen twice a week for almost 3 years now. My Chihuahua and I often house sit for him for two weeks at a time when the ...

Re: Dog destroying door by jumping and scratching at it.
It's whenever someone comes to the door, I think, or hears something outside.
I know there are sticky sheets of paper to discourage cats from scratching at furniture. Does anyone know of such a thing big enough for a door? I wonder if that would work.

Dog destroying door by jumping and scratching at it.
How do I keep a dog from jumping and scratching at the door whenever someone comes to the door. He has already caused quite a bit of damage. I know how to train him to not jump at it - with the off command, for example; but how do I keep him form doing that when there is no one at home?

Re: How do I get a tick part out of m dog
It has worked beautifully. I had cider vinegar and salt on hand so that is what I used. You can hardly see any mark on her belly anymore.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Re: How do I get a tick part out of m dog
Thank you.I'll try the more conservative approach first. If it doesn't work, I'll take her to the vet.

How do I get a tick part out of m dog
I screwed up removing a tick - dont have much experience at it - and now there is a part of the damn thing under my dog's skin. the area is red which means it's inflamed. How do I get the darn thing out? Or will it eventually come out by itself? Do I need to take her to a vet? If so, how long can I ...
