Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I've taken only about... 700! I'll pick out the best few when we get home. I had the camera on the wrong mode for the first two days like a wally, so they have all got a little blue tinge. I'll leave you with the face of instant regret. We were at the gorgeous Holkham Beach and he ran out into...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

That place looks lovely. I don't think Merlin would have quite the same view as Jasper did, being as tall as his knees no doubt. We might stop off there on the way home on Saturday since we're turfed out at 10am. Will be nice to get the dog all tired before the long journey home. We ended up g...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

One place I didn't mention before, LoQ, was The Jolly Sailor at Brancaster Staithe. It doesn't look anything special from outside but has a large beer garden and does amazing pizzas! There was a lovely walk just a bit inland from Brancaster, where we found a stunning poppy field - you might even be...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

So far we have walked around the salt marshes in Stiffkey, walked Holkham beach (we will return for the pine forest another day, the beach was long enough we were all knackered!), and have gone to Wells. We're looking at going to Sheringham Park Tomorrow and Brancaster Beach after that, but after th...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I could have a collie and would in a heartbeat if my garden wasn't so small. Small hyper dogs for me instead. Sheltie will be my second dog, high hopes for her in agility and rally (Merlin can't be arsed with Rally, independent Spitz!) I kind of have a sweet spot for nutso dogs.

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I would take him to a vet personally, or pop some cream on it and bandage it up / put a cone of shame on him so he can't lick it. The vets will have some good topical creams to give you that you can't get anywhere else though. I would cone of shame him up from now on though, the more he irritates it...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Could it be a tick bite? They leave holes when they drop off.

Re: Helping choose

The benefit of a Bernese is if you get tired just strap him up to a cart and you've got your own transport. I did something similar with my old Lurcher and rollerblades. He ran full pelt along the road pulling me on my skates. It was probably really dangerous, he was very quick (as many people...

Re: Helping choose

Well I've met about 6 Bernese mountain dogs (4 at once at a beach, they surrounded Merlin for a sniff. Poor thing was a bit worried... Until one play bowed. ) and they have all been absolutely lovely. One lives just around the corner from me, Womble, he's just a bombproof gem. When Merlin was ...

Re: Helping choose

Well, all of those dogs aren't recommended for first timers except maybe Bernese, but then giant dogs aren't usually recommended for first timers in general. They said they wanted a laid back dog that won't need tonnes of exercise, but they keep adding high energy working dogs to their lists! Both o...

Re: Helping choose

My extended family has alot of experience with rescue dogs, and it is 50/50 on if they work out or not. The best dog my close family ever owned was a rescue, but so is their most troubled. My aunt only rescues dogs, one was amazing, another killed all her guinea pigs and escaped, and their current o...

Re: Helping choose

Maybe her particular line are very chilled! I've always known Hovawarts to be very active working dogs, similar to pointers in their need for stuff to do. They also have a bit of a guard dog streak and can be wary of strangers. Maybe there is a huge difference between show and working lines. As Judy...

Oh my word! Those are active working dogs not for first timers, what made them pick those?

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Congratulations Zara! @MPbandmom I've had alot of good success acclimatising Merlin to loud noises by using desensitisation tracks. Start on a low volume and slowly increase it. Not sure if they will help Sirius but thought I'd mention it. You can find siren noises, gunshot noises and firework noise...

Re: Helping choose

Clumbers from show lines are really unhealthy. They are also pretty stubborn as dogs. Working lines are healthier, but they are working dogs so need things to do. I like them to be honest, but I like aloof, stubborn dogs. Health issues means I would never go for one. If they like Labs, then they cou...
