Mattie, it is obvious that you are upset and feel I have attacked you and I am sorry. I don't object to the advice on this post or forum, which is usually sound, but to the way in which it is sometimes expressed. Your and others posts do strike me as being "harshly" reactionary at times (p...

Emmabeth, in my second post, if you read, I stated that a 10 week-old puppy should be able to hold its bladder for an hour or two at a time--ON TOP OF WALKS AFTER FOOD AND NAPS (which means that they actually will probably go out more than every hour or two)-- but that every dog is different and tha...

One other thing...I do think that every half an hour is excessive for a 10-week puppy. True, when I fostered the 7 week-old puppy, I did take her out every half hour or so when I was at home. But a 10 week-old puppy has a better bladder capacity, so every hour and a half or two hours (on top of afte...

I feel like at least a couple of these responses towards the top are a bit judgmental and not particularly helpful. Owning a puppy is such a learning process and everybody but the most experienced trainers will "mess up" or be at a loss from time to time. That is why we have forums like th...

"Revenge" Urination

So I'm pretty sure that my 8 month-old female Samoyed has urinated out of revenge (or something along those lines). Now and again she will get into a really wild mood, barking nonstop, getting very pushy, etc. So I started putting her in my bedroom as a timeout for just a minute or two. She has toys...

Actually, it looks like a trail-style harness might work as the pressure seems to fall primarily against the chest vs. the shoulders. I had her on a plain adjustable harness where much of the pressure went against the shoulders, I think.

Yes, I prefer the harness as well and that is what she has been trained on since she was little, but the problem is that I'm pretty sure the harness--at least the one that she has had recently--is putting excess pressure on her injured shoulder. Really, the shoulder is my concern more than the pulli...

Dog Ready for a Head Collar?

Greetings! I have an 8 month-old female Samoyed who, up till now, has been walked with a halti. however, she has recently been having some issues with one of her shoulders and I suspect the halti might be putting pressure on the shoulder to exacerbate the pain. Because she is a bit of a puller and h...

Yeah, you can't write off every brand of dog kibble as causing cancer and obesity. True, many do carry carcinogens and grains that dogs cannot digest (that contribute to excess fat). However, there is a broad range of kibble manufacturers who vary in their philosophies on dog nutrition. You can hard...

Agreed, there are a lot of nasty kibble out there. Pretty much everything you find at the grocery store (although I have seen small bags of Newman's Own at Target and Kroger) and at big pet store chains will not be very high quality though you may pay premium prices. You usually have to go to smalle...

Adding a bit of canned food--or maybe some egg yolk or even plain yogurt-- should catch her interest. Just leave the food out for 10-20 minutes at a time and then take it up and refrigerate for later if she has not eaten all the contents of her bowl. After a while she will learn that she has to eat ...

Switching from 3 to 2 meals a day

Hi, I have a 5 3/4-month Samoyed puppy who seems to have a smaller appetite during the day. She will eat, but does not seem quite as hungry as she has been in the past. I did consult the vet to make sure that she isn't ill, but the vet didn't think there is anything to worry about as she is still ve...

I think if you are going to get your dog a dry kibble of the quality of Science Diet, you ought to save your money and get a cheaper food like Dog Chow or Beneful. Science Diet is only slightly better than these products because in most Science Diet kibble, the first ingredient is a listed meat prod...

I feed my puppy Merrick (usually Wilderness Blend), but I also like to give her table scraps of beef, carrots, even no-sugar-added apple sauce. She also likes strips of raw meet, though I suspect she may be allergic to chicken, so I haven't been feeding her raw chicken recently. As a dessert, I some...
