Re: Loose Lead walking

So just to clarify, you guys never use food in addition to the reward of continuing the walk? I know that some positive trainers use food to, and I had assumed that that would speed up the training; what are your guys' thoughts on this?
Thanks. :)

Re: Leash Training- when your dog pulls

Okay, so I know the key to positive training of polite, no-pulling on walks is to start in an easy place and gradually make it harder. I also know that you should reward with food when the dog does something right, and stand in place or go backwards when he goes out of the position you want him to ...

Re: Leash Training- when your dog pulls

Have you read our pinned thread "Loose Leash Walking"? :) It doesn't take very long at all, providing everyone who walks the dog sticks to the system. If of course a dog is 'rewarded' by being allowed to pull by some people, it can take a while for the dog to understand that it can pull w...

Humping Shelter Dogs

I volunteer at an animal shelter and have really enjoyed it, but today I encountered a problem. While in the outdoor fenced play area with a very large, strong, young male dog, he began humping me and had his front paws clenched around me; I really couldn't get him off at first but then eventually c...

How far will mouthing go?

Hi, I have always loved dogs but haven't been around too many dogs until recently, when I began volunteering at a shelter. I always knew that young and untrained dogs tend to be "mouthy" and put your skin in your mouth, but had never really experienced it myself until at the shelter. And i...

Re: Bad Shelter Volunteer

Thank you to both of you for replying. Luckily, I am getting more adjusted to things now and am better able to enjoy my time there. I have met a lot of really nice, happy, and supportive volunteers and haven't really had to deal with or seen again the ones that were not.

Bad Shelter Volunteer

Hi, I am a new member. I have recently begun volunteering at an animal shelter because I really love animals, but I feel like I am a failure. I have done so many things wrong there and people are always correcting me. Some examples: -When you take a dog for a walk, you are supposed to put a note up ...
