Re: Sampson and the sofa

I think I'd have bought one and saw how he got on with it and whether the filling seemed to hold up well before buying the second. I did spend a lot on our two Orvis beds which were expensive - but nearly four years later they're still as good as new so I haven't regretted it. Of course, Jasper hasn...

Re: Sampson and the sofa

That looks nice :D Though you do realise he might just have liked it because of the smell of the last dog to try it out?

Re: lurcher behaviour problems!

My alternative for 'stubborn' is the dog saying, 'Thanks for the suggestion, but actually I'm quite happy here if it's all the same to you.' And at the first sign of confrontation or even bribery, they dig their heels in. Maybe you can create a stubborn dog if they come to think that whenever you as...

"Find Daddy" is fine if Daddy is there to be found, but we can only lie to a dog once, and we've lost that precious response.
I shall save it for life-and-death emergencies then - which hopefully will never happen :D

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I discovered a new recall technique yesterday :D Jasper had discovered something, goodness knows what, buried in the earth in the park and would not leave it. It was right by the playground, and the combination of children and him with something high-value isn't ideal, but he'd have reacted if we'd ...

Re: lurcher behaviour problems!

My laid-back friend has also offered to go to a local field with horses in it with me. We are going to keep Sparky on lead and let him look at the horses from a distance and reward any calm behaviour. The idea is that we will gradually let him get closer each week (always on lead and on the other s...

Re: lurcher behaviour problems!

Maybe the collie genes outweighed the saluki ones - they're at opposite ends of the spectrum in some respects.

Re: lurcher behaviour problems!

I'd hardly ever seen a deer before I got Jasper. When I did, it was a magical experience. Now they pop up blimmin' everywhere

They send us thought waves.

When Jasper was bein housetrained he'd do the stand and stare thing at the back door even when we were in the front room. But then why wouldn't thought waves carry through walls and round corners?

Re: lurcher behaviour problems!

it is training to come away from all the other things in life that are VERY reinforcing such as people for attention, dogs for play, deer for fun and so on that is the challenge that takes time. and until you train for those challenges we don't set our dogs up for failure by having them off leash w...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Jasper met his deerhound friend E this morning. She's nearly two and is having her second season. She was also with a medium-sized terrier, who spent a lot of time with his paws on her back but standing at her side, not really doing anything, like he was leaning on a bar counter  Jasper thought...

Re: lurcher behaviour problems!

No worries - some days when Jasper was young, OH would come home, ask me how he'd been, and I burst into tears  I've just checked on SLR and they seem to have started a regular walk in Maidstone, which is the nearest I've found to Surrey. Depends whereabouts in Surry you are, and how desperate ...
