Victoria Launches Search for Britain’s Naughtiest Dog on ITV
Posted by admin - 01/26/12 at 09:01:26 am - 21 Comments
Victoria has teamed up with UK network ITV to identify and rehabilitate Britain's naughtiest dogs.
In a new campaign to be featured on ITV's Daybreak programme, Victoria will scour the UK looking for the dogs and owners most in need of her help. Victoria made a live satellite appearance during Daybreak on January 26th where she announced the campaign. Through February 1st, UK dog owners can submit their dogs for consideration, with four of the rowdiest pups from all over the country destined for a visit with Victoria. Then, each morning on Daybreak from February 6 through February 9th, Victoria will provide live reports on the dogs she's found and begin the process of helping them and their owners restore harmony.
Following Victoria's visit, each of the four winners will also be entitled to free consultations with Victoria's hand-picked dog trainers. Several members of her exclusive Victoria Stilwell Positively Dog Training (VSPDT) network of world-class positive reinforcement trainers will provide followup support with each dog to ensure that they are back on the path to avoid the title 'Britain's Naughtiest Dog.'
Submit your application to win a visit from Victoria and her team of trainers here.
Visit the Daybreak website for more information about the campaign and be sure to tune in during the week of February 6 to see if Victoria can handle the worst Britain can throw her way.

Victoria Describes Pet Peeves in USA Weekend
Posted by admin - 12/27/11 at 12:12:51 pm - 10 CommentsVictoria joined other noted dog trainers and behaviorists in a recent issue of USA Weekend to describe her chief 'pet' peeve.
"We must stop dominance-based and punitive training methods. There’s no science there, and dogs don’t learn anything except to fear us. Positive training techniques work; not to mention they are more humane, enhancing the relationship with your dog instead of destroying it. If dogs are our best friends, they deserve our kindness and respect. I won’t rest until science-based positive training is the norm.”

Not just a dog expert, Victoria's top tips for managing cat behavior were featured in a recent Cat Fancy article. While she is best known for her work as a dog trainer, Victoria says that cat "behavior follows some universal rules" and offered some great tips for cats.
“Humans need to think about what the cat needs and then give him an appropriate outlet for that need,” she said. “In the beginning, it may be necessary to close off certain parts of the house until the cat has learned to scratch on the appropriate item. Covering items with tinfoil, though not my favorite, also works because cats won’t like the feel of it on their claws.”

Separation Anxiety article from The Bark
Posted by admin - 06/28/11 at 07:06:28 am - No Comments
In my recent article for The Bark magazine (available on newstands now), separation anxiety was the question of the day:
Reader's Question: Charley, a rescued three year-old Lab who’d spent his entire life in an outdoor kennel, was scared of everything when we first got him. He’s been with us for eight months and now, he panics when we leave him alone. We have two crates, one in our house and one in our car. He goes into the home crate and stays there for about an hour. I’ve been gradually closing the door and even leaving the house, and when I come back, he’s fine. However, when we leave him in his car crate, he just loses it, so distraught that he’s destroyed a crate bed and a quilt. Is this separation anxiety? We adore him and want to help him,but what can we do?

Victoria and her friend and mentor Dr. Nicholas Dodman were both quoted extensively in a recent article in the Baltimore Sun newspaper recapping the 2011 International Association of Animal Behavior Counselors (IAABC) conference, which was held in Rhode Island April 1-3.
Victoria was quoted as saying, ""Dogs are sensitive, emotional, vulnerable beings that need us to help to teach them and care for them. They're not out for world domination. Your dog doesn't necessarily want to be top dog. Your dog just wants to understand what is expected. It's ridiculous to think you need to be dominant so your dog can be submissive."
Dr. Frank McMillan of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary also discussed the dangers of compulsion training, saying, "no one argues that our pets have emotions and may suffer as a result of severe psychological injury. There are a long list of potential causes, among them growing up in puppy mills, military service, suffering abuse, being repeatedly re-homed and potentially even force-based dog training."

Victoria’s article in The Bark – Scent Marking
Posted by admin - 03/10/11 at 09:03:50 pm - 1 CommentVictoria's article on scent marking for The Bark magazine is now available online.
Excerpt:
Q: We had two questions for Victoria on the sensitive issue of marking and inappropriate defecation. One involved a young male dog adopted from a shelter who, the owner wrote, “is an ideal playmate for our female dog and is perfect in all ways but one: though we walk him multiple times a day, take him out after meals and pay close attention to him, he still urinates in the house, and will even mark us with urine. We’ve taken him to the vet and he received a clean bill of health.” The other involved a female who had a hard beginning in a puppy mill; her owner noted that she “sometimes will poo while lying in bed or sitting on the couch with us, sometimes even while sitting on our lap. We’ve tried (with limited success) to anticipate her need to go outside, but this has us stumped.”
A: Scent marking is a very normal and common behavior, particularly in male dogs, but it becomes a big problem when marking occurs in the home. Dogs mark to advertise their presence and to claim territory and resources. Urine and feces contain pheromones, or chemical messages, that convey information — age, gender, health and reproductive status — about the dog doing the marking.
